Chennai Rains: Climate change, unplanned real state construction and unpreparedness
Water-water everywhere
Floods in Chennai during Nov.-Dec. 2015:
The first point is Oct 15- Dec. 15 is the North-East (NE) Monsoon season in Tamilnadu. The South West (SW) monsoon does not touch Tamilnadu while the rest of India (initiated from Kerala) is gripped by the SW monsoon. There are geographical details. NE monsoon sometimes was also known as the receding portion of the SW.
Children happy
This is a different question that why children are happy when the schools are closed! There appears to be nothing interesting, rather fear in the schools. Anyway. When it was raining in Chennai during mid-Nov, the business was usual as it was time for the NE monsoon. Children were happy due to closure of school for a day just before Deepawali. No one expected that it will be full one week holiday during Nov.14-21 2015! After a few days of dry days, it started again. This time the worst was yet to come. While he schools were closed, children were receiving home work via their websites. Eeryday there were updates on their websites.
Storage of water in man-made reservoirs
Chembarambakkam is the one of the reservoirs in Kancheepuram district about 30 km from Chennai.
Chennai looks forward for the year long drinking water from the much awaited NE monsoon. Therefore this period of rains is generally welcome rains. Now and then, there is an update on the capacity and current level of the reservoirs (other one being Puzhal lake and Pondi reservoirs). Both the newspaper images are from The HINDU of second week of Dec. 2015.
Unplanned houses near the wetlands
About 20 years back for example, there were rice fields in the Velachery area with a few houses around. As on date, there are high rise buildings, star hotels and Asia's biggest shopping mall! People are proud of "their house" nearby! The mushrooming of such real state -unplanned "developments" has contributed to the inundation that lasts longer. There should be some rules, but rarely followed. Its not like NainiTal, where I was told that there is no way one can construct a house now. Even renovation is not possible.
Climate dynamics and carbon footprint
Kyoto protocol and 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Paris are the buzz words. While the rise in the temperatures is expected to increase the rains like this in future, no one is really worried about. When the reservoirs went passed their capacity, huge water had to be released! This is child's play? Horrible. How can a reservoir release water without any plans beforehand? Same is true for the earth quake prone Narmada or Tehri dams. The unpreparedness of the all the government machinery in present and past for anticipating the floods from such water release into the areas (and informing in advance) was exposed during Dec. 1-3.
Blackout in Chennai
It was 72 hours before we could get electricity restored. It was time to do YOGA, look at your old literature, classifying laboratory screws, optics and stands, read some books while using left out candles from Deepawali. The flash light that keep in my office bag and a few others that I kept on charging time to time were handy. All the students bought one candle each, obviously the stores ran out of candles. Stores also ran out of essential commodities- except the cosmetics, there was not even a biscuit on the shelves.
Airport closed, Trains cancelled/ partially cancelled, no Taxis but boats on the water logged streets.
We hope that there will be rethinking on the development and planing of the city along the old cities with more drains and seepage area. Also the disaster management could be revisited.

I quote the 2 incidences of 2 couples going to US (with children) from this article first:
"One afternoon, the Danish mother decides to have lunch with her partner and parks the baby in a stroller outside a restaurant on an East Village street as they enjoy a leisurely meal. For her, this is common practice in Copenhagen, arguably one of the safest cities for children. Several passers-by see what they believe is an “abandoned and crying child”, and call emergency services. The police arrive and the couple is arrested for negligence.
In the second story, an Indian couple live with their sons in Oregon. The mother decides to give up her career to care for the two toddlers. One evening, the elder child falls down and is hurt while playfully climbing on his father’s back. He is rushed to hospital where the parents are informed about a hairline fracture of the tibia. Following treatment, the mother is interrogated about what looks like a suspicious injury, during which she innocently remarks that the father “may have accidentally dropped the child”.
The Hindu of 22nd Aug has an interesting letter to the editor by Mr. K. D. Viswanaathan

This letter tells how in USA, a grandfather is charged a fine for holding his grand child in his lap!
This is interesting that people who go abroad must be educated about the basic living styles by their embassies etc.

Demise of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam: A wave of sorrow डा. ए. पी. जे. अब्दुल कलाम का निधन : शोक की लहर
Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (former president, India during 2002-2007), known as the "Missile Man" of India passed away in the evening of 27th July 2015 while delivering a speech at IIM, Shilong. Dr. Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamilnadu. Right now whole nation is gripped by a wave of sorrow, be it children or the elderly-all felt the same shock. This is a wave of sorrow in a phase.* The Government has announced 7-day mourning in which the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout the
country where it is flown regularly and there will be no official recreation. Additional information is that even though a holiday was declared in schools in Tamilnadu, there is no declaration of holiday by the government. This is in respect to his desire! RIP.

थोड़ा हट के: Think Differently : Manjul Bhargav on creativity
नहीं, वो थोड़ा हट के है.
बावनवें दीक्ष्यांत समारोह के मुख्य अतिथि, (२०१४ के फील्ड्स पुरस्कार से सम्मानित - जो गणित के नोबेल पुरस्कार से जाना जाता है), पद्म भूषण मंजुल भार्गव (कनाडा से) अपनी स्वतः स्फूर्त हंसीं और सादगी से सबका मन हर ले गये.
मंजुल अभी ४१ साल के हैं. जिस प्रकार से उन्होंने समारोह की पूर्वसंध्या पर दिए अपने व्याख्यान में संख्याओं, फूलों और हज़ारों साल पुरानी सभ्यता से जुड़े श्लोकों का समावेश किया वह देखते ही बनता था. उनका श्लोकों का संगीतमय वाचन एवं तबले पर बजाये गए उदहारण से नवें से बारहवें तक की कक्ष्याओँ के विद्यार्थियों ने जिस प्रकार से स्वागत किया- वह एक बॉलीवुड का सितारा ही पा सकता है. जय हो.
मेरी पढ़ाई के समय के दौरान, वहां जब भी महिलायें (चाहे दीदी , माँ, बहन या सहयोगी हों) किसी बात पर अपनी साख बनाने की कोशिश करती थीं, तो कहती थीं - "नहीं, ये जरा हट के है".
जरा हट के- ये ही कहा मंजुल ने स्नातकों से जो डिग्री ले रहे थे . कैसे कहा?- थोड़ा संक्षेप में :
1. Learn from the masters (choose your own), विशेषज्ञों से सीखें
2. Think differently : जरा हट के सोचें।
3. Explore related things, do what you like- (follow your nose), अपने क्षेत्र के अलावा और भी चीजों को पढें . जो आपको पसंद हो, वो करें.
4. Learn about art (and search connections with your work) for creativity. रचनात्मकता के लिए ललित कलाओं के बारे में पढ़ें, सीखें और उनसे अपने काम के सम्बन्ध बनायें।
Creativity can not be taught but environment can be created...
रचनात्मकता को पढ़ाया नहीं जा सकता . लेकिन उसके लिए माहौल बनाया जा सकता है.
उन्होंने इसका सम्बन्ध मन-मस्तिस्क के दायें एवं बाएं हिस्सों के बीच के सामंजस्य के लिए आवश्यक बताया.

आज से कुछ साल पहले " हीरो हौंडा -सा रे ग मा पा " Hero Honda Sa re ga ma pa के ऑडिशन देखते समय लगा था कि आज के युग में भी शास्त्रीय टाइप का संगीत उतना ही मनमोहक हो सकता है.

एक कुत्ता और हड्डी Dog with a bone
एक कुत्ता और हड्डी (बच्चों की कहानी)
एक बार एक भूखा कुत्ता एक शिकार की दुकान के पास से गुज़रा। उसे भाग्य से एक हड्डी मिली जिसमें थोड़ा कुछ मीट भी बचा था. कुत्ते ने उसे झट से उठाया और एक झाडी के ओट पर बैठ कर मन लगा के चाटने लगा. कुछ देर बाद बाद उसे प्यास लगी. पानी की तलाश में जाने लगा तो उसे वो हड्डी को न छोड़ सका, और साथ ले गया.
पानी पीने जब तालाब में पहुंचा और किनारे खड़ा हुआ तो उसे एक और कुत्ता मुँह में हड्डी लिए पानी में दिखा. कुत्ते को तो वो हड्डी भी चाहिए थी. वो उस पर भोंका तो मुँह की हड्डी गिर के तालब में चली गयी.
इंग्लिश की कहावत " अ डॉग विथ अ बॉन" "A dog with a bone" इसी पर आधारित हैं. इसका मतलब है, ऐसा मनुस्य जो किसी बात को लेके अड़ जाये.
