harling -what it harling?

Demonstrations in Dublin: Example !

6th July 2013
Who does not remember Savita Halappanavar. Her death has invoked several demonstrations at Dublin, both in favour of (by mostly younger people) as well as against  (mostly by seniours) the abortion in the past. While roaming around Dublin city-center today (after seeing the Museum, with history from thousands of years of BC (from Ireland), besides one special section on Egyptian (real) Mummies,  it became a memorable day.
Thousands of people (estimates of 35000) demonstrated around the 'city center' with pamphlets, balloons, posters (" I am for life"), and loud speakers walking through the city center.  It was one of the unprecedented rallies I have ever seen.  What was more concerned was the presence of the "pro-abortion people" standing (in minority) both sides of the street with posters such as "my life, my health, my choice" or "I am a woman, not a womb"etc.  The impressive part of the whole display was that there was no incidence at all.  Police had all arrangements with reasonable presence since morning- which surprised me, as the main reason was not known by that time.
I am just thinking, had this level and type of demonstration been in some other country, what would have not happened!

July 12, 2013 update: A bill has been passed in Irish lower house for limited abortion after a long debate on several points.

The Prime minister

3. milat khilat laziyat (बिहारी)

Sitaron Se Aage Jahaan Aur Bhi Hain, Abhi Ishq Ke Imtihan Aur Bhi Hain.'

[This  particular story had a great impact on the outlook towards the society. This was one of the first posts in this blog in 2009]. 8 April 2013

Please give some curry]
[If the piece  also falls, let it drop].

Interesting questions for the interview

Occasionally the committee may come up with questions like 'What did you eat this morning?'   Are you prepared to answer this?  Such questions are the "test points" to know your EQ and the response you would be giving when in the organization.  In any case, have a look at the list of the questions here.

Birthday

(Special on the birth day)
The full moon after 3 days:
This is how my mother used to answer my question (by relating it with my grand mother’s visit) about my birth day...”When you were born, my mother had visited me, and she (my grand mother) had said that today is Saturday and the day after tomorrow is the full moon and I have to reach there to do something...”

Pandit ji had marked the calendar:
I also remember, during my childhood my mother had reaffirmed that one of the Pandit ji (Pad-da, पद दा ) who was from Kulethi had ‘teepped (टीप लिया)’ my birthday on his regional calendar (patarha) when I was born.  So when we (will) need the Janm Patri, the birth document (mostly for marriage purpose those days), we can simply request him to make yours”.  I used to wonder, why we should wait for that day to make the birth document.  Of course, in due course of time- Pad-da passed away... .

Astrologers failed:
When one of our relatives (who is an experience astrologer, now lives in Mumbai) visited Haldwani while my mother was with me.  The question of birth document was attempted. Within a short while, it turned out that the Saturday does not fit with the full moon etc.

8-10 days older than him:
There were a few other possibilities of finding out my birthday. For example, my childhood friend (now an excellent driver) Hira Singh (of Malla Pados) was born some 8-10 days here or there with me!

Difficult times:
I was born somewhere in the sixties in the foothills of Himalaya (in Champawat) in a family of a farmer mother and father. Mother was a hard working person, had about 13 children out of which 6 of us have survived. It is not that only me-who does not remember my birthday - as I was a day old when I was born, all my 5 siblings sincerely do not do so.  This tells tons about the preference of the lifestyles of 1960s and 2010s.

Got married without the Janam Patri:
I got married in 1994 with my wife whose birthday is known exactly.  In our beloved country we have a famous convention of JANAM PATRI (जन्म पत्री ) matching  before one gets married. At the time of fixing my marriage, my mother was living with me in NainiTal.  She was in her late seventies during 1993-1994. I used to ask her about the day of my birth (so that the birth document can be passed on to any one who insists for).  However, with the broad-minded thinking of my father-in-law the hurdle was crossed without any fuss.

The first cake:
The only day I cut the birthday cake for the first time was when one of my Japanese family friends celebrated my birthday in Japan, in 1992!   The second one I remember is about 2 years back and the third one today: 15th Jan 2013, when my family has bought another cake! I must follow the 'modern' times.

The tasty food of that day:
Today, I remember vividly (I did this every time when I heard of any birthday) once  my mother had  put “TIKA (टीका) ” on my forehead, and had declared: "Today is your birth day"!  I remember the tasty dal-bhat (दाल -भात) .  I had on the occasion.  But I was too young to know the importance of the birthday then.  That day and this day, I do not know when is my the real birthday.

Greetings of the day:
Birthdays were not supposed to be so important those days. Even during my university days (not to talk about the school days) I do not remember to have celebrated birthday of any of my friends.  I can guarantee- nowadays birthdays are very important. This morning my sons greeted  me with birthday wishes, my nephew did the same, my wife greeted me by gifting a shirt which she bought in discounted rate from a shop in Adyar!

Time-line on the facebook: Thanks to communication Tech:
The whole day, I am receiving e-mails messages that my “time-line” in the Facebook is receiving birthday greetings! There were 3-4 phone calls (in mobile) as well, which my wife received, even as the IIT exchange was not working!

It is a different thing!  After all, after 48 years of living in this planet, there are people who greet me!

Famous dates as birthdays of 20th century:

So how is this birthday then?  We do have famous dates in India.  1st January, 26th January, 15th August, 2nd October etc..  People whose date of births are not known, they get these dates as birthdays.  Similarly, I am sure one of my elder brothers who took me to the school first time must have said it 15 January!

A return gift:
Thank you all for the greetings.
With modesty and changing times, I thank everyone to remember me also on my "birthday".  Thank you everybody. I hope you enjoyed this return gift.

What do they want (Protests in Dec. 2012 in India)

2012: What do ‘they’ want? [

This is the question I came across with many of my friends when I traveled from South to North and back during 3rd and 4th week of December 2012.  It was about the protests in Delhi (later spread in the country) after the brutal incident of 16th Dec. 2012 on the streets of Delhi in a running bus.

The protests  begun with the slogans such as “ we want JUSTICE” or “Meri skirt se unchi meri aawaaz hai ("मेरी स्कर्ट से ऊँची मेरी आवाज़ है) ”, “Nazar Teri Buri aur Parda Main Karun? (नज़र तेरी  बुरी  और  पर्दा   मैं  करूँ ?)” etc. etc.  The protests followed with closure of 10 Metro stations in Delhi, lathi charge, tear gas, water spray by police on the protesters; even death of one police constable.  India gate remained closed and I had to negotiate my way in Delhi for a change over on Monday, 24th Dec.

One of the news (that came to light later), I came across was that just before the main incidence, the perpetrators robbed a daily worker and dropped him near IIT Delhi gate.  The robbed man went to one of the police stations to report the incidence. Had the police started a swift action on this incidence, the subsequent events could have been avoided.

Photograph on the right shows the mood of the nation (Headline: A young woman dies, a nation mourns) through a National newspaper (The HINDU is an established old National newspaper) after the death of the girl.
So, besides the delay in the judicial system, it is the daily life of individuals in India that is at the stake.  The brutal event behind these protests confirms the fact that the daughters in India can even be killed even on the streets of metro with no fault of theirs!  The police and the security system is just a mute spectator.  Worst still, the police could actually be against you at times, with several hidden reasons.  This is in contrast with the west, where if you go to police, you would have found the best protection on the earth!   In India, no one would even approach the police due to fear of harassment at a later date.  People at least have respect  for the Traffic police, as these are visible on the streets for a good cause and make people follow rules.

Therefore, what "they" want now is “Police must be paid & trained well and trained to act secular in India. Citizen be educated to respect all on ‘war footing’.”

Couplets of Kabir (कबीर के दोहे)

Kabirdas has been relevant more than even when he wrote these couplets.  I am trying to collect some of them (mostly from internet, till I get a text book).  Some of the Hindi  version is my effort, as roman character does not give the real feel:

Worship- thats great-

Following few are posted here with the courtesy Twitter ( by Debang)

------------- randonly remembered---------

Apparently Kabeer did not write,  his friends/students kept on noting them down (for us).

Do not try to delay things.

1. This one was written in 1993, when I was about to marry (my friend Zahoor had written it in irritation). [Zahoor got married later on].

 2. This one is about my village (in 2009) for the information of those who think otherwise:

A film on Curiosity (Mars rover) by NASA

A small machine (like a toy car) with lots of  equipment (and laser for LIBS) named " Curiosity" landed on the Mars on Aug 6, 2012.  NASA has issued a small film of 2 minutes 37 second on this.
Please have a look!  And still believe- in whatever you can. All this was happening accurate to the fractions of seconds after more than a year of packing it on the earth (launched on Nov. 26, 2011) and traveling with the hell lot of a speed!

See it yourself by clicking this link.

Difficult times for academic institutes

Here is some text that was circulated in IITM network by our people (a group of people led by AJ).  At 6 PM (Aug. 27, 2012) about 1700 people walked in the campus as a candle light vigil for about 2 hours.  Details are below and also the links of the press.  We also saw how press some times reports in a biased manner. The press in India has not yet come of age!

Text and links  are as follows.  Prem

Dear Colleagues,
It has been a painful few days for us. We have seen that truth has not prevailed. Our women students feel harassed when photographed against their wishes, and we are not allowed to even point this out. Malicious statements are made against us, and several of our faculty and staff are repeatedly humiliated (some links are given below as examples). Police file an FIR against six of our people. Three are arrested and remanded for two days. We are made to apologize for wrongs not committed.
We cannot even stand up for the truth. It makes us angry and want to fight back. But we will not retaliate. We will fight for truth to prevail. We will let go of our anger. We have to recognise that as teachers, we have failed to teach our youngsters to stand for truth.
We have to re-dedicate ourselves to truth. We will not raise our hands in protest. We will not disrupt anything. We will not even make speeches. We will only appeal to all those who were involved to stand up for the truth. Let their conscience tell them to stand up for it as well. Most of them know the truth. Those who do not can easily find out, for there were many witnesses to the incident and the events thereafter.
We will assemble at Gajendra Circle, IITM at 6 PM on Monday August 28, 2012. We will sing songs and we will have a candlelight vigil with the simple words, “let truth prevail.”
If the truth fails to prevail, we will do it again and again, without disrupting anything or creating any difficulty for anyone. We will do this without anger. We will do it for ourselves, because we believe in Tagore’s song, “Jodi tor daksunekeunaaase, tobeEklacholo re (even if no one comes hearing your call, then march alone).”
The links to newspaper reports have been avoided here....in good faith. (Jan 26, 2013)
