(Prof. Ananth's remarks at RSI)
Introduction
I attended the inaugural of “summer program 2010’ at 9:00 AM on 5th May 2010. The program is held under the auspices of the “Research Science Initiative” Chennai, an effort by a few citizen of Chennai. This program is intended to develop an attraction for basic sciences for the high school children at this era when every parent wants his/her child to become an engineer.
This program has been led by Padma Seshadri Bala Bhawan group of schools with the support of other institutes including IIT Madras.
I was invited to the inaugural by one of my seniour colleague Prof. V. Balakrishan (we call him Bala). Bala himself is a stalwart in arranging such programs and has been one of the key figures in this program also.
To be a mentor /Lab visit
Bala had come to me while I was busy in conducting/correcting Physics II (Electrodynamics) for 641 students of B. Tech first year. He came with a question if I was available during this one month to be a “mentor” for one of the students (out of 34) they have selected. Since I was going to be away in North India during those few weeks, he wanted me to give a “lab visit” to the students. I readily agreed to it even though arranging a visit of 34 students to a sophisticated laser laboratory was a difficult task. But I was sure that the well trained Ph.D. students (Ramanaiah, Basanth, Akbar and Namboothiri) will be able to show some useful things to the students. I shall talk about the demonstration we had planned at a later stage.
Kindly remain seated:
It started with a few remarks by a 11th class girl student who conducted the proceedings gracefully like a professional TV anchor. On of the best things I ever heard as the phrase “kindly remain seated” immediately after announcing that ‘a few students will now sing a prayer “Nav ichcha teete”. It is petty unusual but people start getting up every time when there is an announcement for the prayer in any function, as if it is a national anthem. I have always felt that one could appreciate the prayer much more by sitting calmly than standing up. Anyway there were some reasons but it also broake the tradition of unnecessarily standing for the prayer!
Nothing can be taught
The director of IIT Madras, Professor M. S. Ananth has been an excellent speaker on any occasion related to education and science. I have been listning to him over a decade now. But time and again I have admired his speech on a particular topic. This time it was education-to-high school students. Ananth started by quoting a book “Science and Common Understanding” . Referring the book (without quoting it verbatim) he told that the message from the book is something like as follows: “ When we see any ancient monument, we admire the art. We do not see that the beautiful art was the ‘ordinary human effort’ with the vision and the direction given by a visionary.”
House of education:
Science learning is like a house with various rooms. Some of the rooms are complete means we understand everything; we put it in the text books of the schools. Some rooms are half done (we understand them reasonably), we teach it to the graduates and undergraduates. When the room is not at all started, we do not know how the room will look like (we do not know much about it) and that’s what we teach it at Ph.D. level.
Not to cover the course but partly uncover it:
Ananth remembered of his friends who joined IIT Kanpur when he himself joined IIT Madras, This is a famous story. His friend went to Prof. Kelkar (who was the director of IIT K) and said : Sir, I am sorry that I could not cover the full course contents of the fluid mechanics”. Professor Kelkar smiled and replied, “ Gentleman, I have not hired you for covering the full course!, I have hired you to uncover the part of it”!.
7 Principles of teaching-learning processes:
While fully aware of he fact and the requirement of good grades obtained by the students (generally by studying themselves just a month before the exam), Ananth gave a few known principles on the modern experience of the academicians :
1. Nothing can be taught: Different students learn the subject on their own (even when we teach all of them in the class, what we taught them, and in spite of what we spoke).
2. Near to far: In teaching, we should take examples from nearest places. For example, in teaching pollution control, we will take data from the city of Chicago, as for any Indian city the data was jut not available. Even if it is available, it will not be authentic. For example, in weather control, some times May 3rd will be cloudy in 1982, 1983, 1984 etc, shear by the habit of filling the records by the office.
3. Diversity of the problems
This is contrary to the exam pattern. Instead of solving several problems, emphasis should be given in solving the same problem from the different angles. He gave an example of a problem being solved by a mathematician and a physicist.
4. Repetition is essential
When a professor was told that he has repeated his point 7 times in the lecture, he said: “Did I do that? Thank god, we are supposed to tell it 7 times.” But He quoted that we definitely should tell 3 times with the following rule: “Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and tell them what you told them”.
5. Right Brain and Left brain
When research was done on accident patients whose left or right brains were damaged. It was concluded tat the 2 brains of the human brain has different tasks. The left brain gathers and keeps the data, while the right brain is logical, good at step by step analysis , musical and imagination etc. That tells us an important point that many students are not really listening in the class but their left brain is working. This helps them when they are preparing for the exam and remember why professor was stressing this point again and again.
6. Experimental verification
Aristotle had said that women has less number of teeth than the men. This statement was never checked for its validity for years (and later found to be wrong). Actually Aristotle himself had two wives and never troubled himself to count the number of teeth his wives had.
7. Right to question
Habit of questioning is one of the important aspect for teaching learning process. Some one has said: “ Young people must listen to elders carefully but do not believe in it necessarily.”
Further on the necessity of ‘science and humility’, Ananth recalled a story of Ramanujam visiting Hardy in Britain. Hardy posed a difficult problem to Ramanujam. Ramanujam immediately wrote the formula on the board. The formula (as Hardy said) was too beautiful to be not TRUE. Hardy carefully solved problem onver a period of one year and found the same answer. Surprised at this Hardy asked Ramanujam: How did he guess the answer so quickly? Ramanujam answered : “Due to the intelligence and the faith in the god”.
Ananth said that Science is the most arrogant. In this ever expanding universe, inside a small galaxy, in a small planet a person thinking that he knows everything – is it not the arrogance then what is this? He concluded with a suggestion that we must always practice humility.
I shall edit this text when I shall get an opportunity. Best wishes from Champawat with the help of the BSNL mobile e-connection. 21 May 2010.

When you go to college
With due credits from the following site (of MIT admissions).
http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/life/workplay_balance_at_mit/50_things.shtml
"50 Things"
Dear Class of 2010,This will be my last entry written specifically for you; beginning with the launch of our new site in early September, I'll begin focusing on the future class of 2011. I hope that you guys won't be strangers; stay in touch either in person (come visit us!) or online (please drop by the blogs from time to time and say hi).
As you begin your college experience, and I prepare for my 10-year college reunion, I thought I'd leave you with the things that, in retrospect, I think are important as you navigate the next four years. I hope that some of them are helpful.
Here goes...
- Your friends will change a lot over the next four years. Let them.
- Call someone you love back home a few times a week, even if just for a few minutes.
- In college more than ever before, songs will attach themselves to memories. Every month or two, make a mix cd, mp3 folder, whatever - just make sure you keep copies of these songs. Ten years out, they'll be as effective as a journal in taking you back to your favorite moments.
- Take naps in the middle of the afternoon with reckless abandon.
- Adjust your schedule around when you are most productive and creative. If you're nocturnal and do your best work late at night, embrace that. It may be the only time in your life when you can.
- If you write your best papers the night before they are due, don't let people tell you that you "should be more organized" or that you "should plan better." Different things work for different people. Personally, I worked best under pressure - so I always procrastinated... and always kicked ass (which annoyed my friends to no end). ;-) Use the freedom that comes with not having grades first semester to experiment and see what works best for you.
- At least a few times in your college career, do something fun and irresponsible when you should be studying. The night before my freshman year psych final, my roommate somehow scored front row seats to the Indigo Girls at a venue 2 hours away. I didn't do so well on the final, but I haven't thought about psych since 1993. I've thought about the experience of going to that show (with the guy who is now my son's godfather) at least once a month ever since.
- Become friends with your favorite professors. Recognize that they can learn from you too - in fact, that's part of the reason they chose to be professors.
- Carve out an hour every single day to be alone. (Sleeping doesn't count.)
- Go on dates. Don't feel like every date has to turn into a relationship.
- Don't date someone your roommate has been in a relationship with.
- When your friends' parents visit, include them. You'll get free food, etc., and you'll help them to feel like they're cool, hangin' with the hip college kids.
- In the first month of college, send a hand-written letter to someone who made college possible for you and describe your adventures thus far. It will mean a lot to him/her now, and it will mean a lot to you in ten years when he/she shows it to you.
- Embrace the differences between you and your classmates. Always be asking yourself, "what can I learn from this person?" More of your education will come from this than from any classroom.
- All-nighters are entirely overrated.
- For those of you who have come to college in a long-distance relationship with someone from high school: despite what many will tell you, it can work. The key is to not let your relationship interfere with your college experience. If you don't want to date anyone else, that's totally fine! What's not fine, however, is missing out on a lot of defining experiences because you're on the phone with your boyfriend/girlfriend for three hours every day.
- Working things out between friends is best done in person, not over email. (IM does not count as "in person.") Often someone's facial expressions will tell you more than his/her words.
- Take risks.
- Don't be afraid of (or excited by) the co-ed bathrooms. The thrill is over in about 2 seconds.
- Wednesday is the middle of the week; therefore on wednesday night the week is more than half over. You should celebrate accordingly. (It makes thursday and friday a lot more fun.)
- Welcome failure into your lives. It's how we grow. What matters is not that you failed, but that you recovered.
- Take some classes that have nothing to do with your major(s), purely for the fun of it.
- It's important to think about the future, but it's more important to be present in the now. You won't get the most out of college if you think of it as a stepping stone.
- When you're living on a college campus with 400 things going on every second of every day, watching TV is pretty much a waste of your time and a waste of your parents' money. If you're going to watch, watch with friends so at least you can call it a "valuable social experience."
- Don't be afraid to fall in love. When it happens, don't take it for granted. Celebrate it, but don't let it define your college experience.
- Much of the time you once had for pleasure reading is going to disappear. Keep a list of the books you would have read had you had the time, so that you can start reading them when you graduate.
- Things that seem like the end of the world really do become funny with a little time and distance. Knowing this, forget the embarassment and skip to the good part.
- Every once in awhile, there will come an especially powerful moment when you can actually feel that an experience has changed who you are. Embrace these, even if they are painful.
- No matter what your political or religious beliefs, be open-minded. You're going to be challenged over the next four years in ways you can't imagine, across all fronts. You can't learn if you're closed off.
- If you need to get a job, find something that you actually enjoy. Just because it's work doesn't mean it has to suck.
- Don't always lead. It's good to follow sometimes.
- Take a lot of pictures. One of my major regrets in life is that I didn't take more pictures in college. My excuse was the cost of film and processing. Digital cameras are cheap and you have plenty of hard drive space, so you have no excuse.
- Your health and safety are more important than anything.
- Ask for help. Often.
- Half of you will be in the bottom half of your class at any given moment. Way more than half of you will be in the bottom half of your class at some point in the next four years. Get used to it.
- In ten years very few of you will look as good as you do right now, so secretly revel in how hot you are before it's too late.
- In the long run, where you go to college doesn't matter as much as what you do with the opportunities you're given there. The MIT name on your resume won't mean much if that's the only thing on your resume. As a student here, you will have access to a variety of unique opportunities that no one else will ever have - don't waste them.
- On the flip side, don't try to do everything. Balance = well-being.
- Make perspective a priority. If you're too close to something to have good perspective, rely on your friends to help you.
- Eat badly sometimes. It's the last time in your life when you can do this without feeling guilty about it.
- Make a complete ass of yourself at least once, preferably more. It builds character.
- Wash your sheets more than once a year. Trust me on this one.
- If you are in a relationship and none of your friends want to hang out with you and your significant other, pay attention. They usually know better than you do.
- Don't be afraid of the weird pizza topping combinations that your new friend from across the country loves. Some of the truly awful ones actually taste pretty good. Expand your horizons.
- Explore the campus thoroughly. Don't get caught.
- Life is too short to stick with a course of study that you're no longer excited about. Switch, even if it complicates things.
- Tattoos are permanent. Be very certain.
- Don't make fun of prefrosh. That was you like 2 hours ago.
- Enjoy every second of the next four years. It is impossible to describe how quickly they pass.
- This is the only time in your lives when your only real responsibility is to learn. Try to remember how lucky you are every day.
Welcome to some of the best years of your lives.

Solar Eclipse at IIT Madras
Eclipse could be seen throughout the campus through the pin holes of the tree leaves (known as Leaf canopy)[Ref 1]. A reading lens of 1 diopter (the first reading lens one needs at the age of 40 years) can make things pretty bright. Among many images through leaf-canopy, two bright semi-circles are images of the sun through a reading lens.

The another city I went for a meeting was without carrying much luggage. I thought I should take a running taxi without waiting in the prepaid Que. I came out and looked around. A taxi approached me and I sat inside (after agreeing with the driver on the meter) relaxing that it will take about an hour to reach my destination.
1. Within a few seconds the driver pulled out a chart " please have a look into the chart,at how much you will pay, as the meter will show about 21". I glanced through the chart, 21 was too much! It was showing some number which did not seem to be acceptable to me as I was exactly at the same place about 4 months back with MERU Taxi (city code+44224422). I understand India was changing fast, but this speed was unacceptable to a cautious mind. I immediately objected and asked the driver to stop as this was too much! he immediately changed his position and said " Oh, by mistake I have given you the NIGHT chart; the day chart is ..this." he gave me the other one, which even showed almost the same price, a bit less though. I just felt comfortable that we know each other a bit better.
During the travel, he was not comfortable with the traffic signals. He drove pretty rough. (From right to left, without following the lane discipline etc.). He made a few comments, such as " I am local (and not from UP , BIHAR)". "This city has changed a lot". "There are 10 or 20 vehicles in one house here!" "too much of Road Jams", etc. From his conversations (on his mobile phone), I could see that he had to drive about an hour or more, even though he was promising the person to be there in next half an hour (we still had to drive half hour to our destination).
2. We reached to security, where I showed my I-card. Then I entered his name (I forgot) and TAXI number MH01G23-- (last 2 numbers I forgot again) and gave the slip back to the driver as he would use it for out gate. We reached to the guest house. Without even looking into the meter, he said " it is 350 sab, I will give you 150..." I said how, show me the meter! By the way, the meter was covered with an opaque plastic, which did not allow me to see any thing during my journey from the airport to the guest house. I saw the same chart and it was about Rs 325/= I agreed that I should pay him 350/-
Even though I had the change of 350/= since he offered 150/- I handed over a 500 rupee note quickly and placed the 150 in my purse. While I was doing this he said "What is this?" He showed me a 100 rupee note in his hand, indicating as if I gave him this note! I took back the note and gave him the change I had.
It is a different thing that I immediately had suspected that there was something wrong, but was not even thinking about it as I had to check-in and it was becoming late etc.
After about 30 minutes when I called my wife and asked her if she had seen a 500 rupee note in my purse (we discussed the money before I left), she said yes!
I learned that still the old dirty tricks are popular in the city. My colleague who had arrived from Kolakata told me (another story) and why he is afraid of taking the vehicle from the road in the city!

Wake up time
---------------------------------
This text was posted for the students of a hostel for which I was the Incharge for 3 years. I thought it is useful:
When the Dean (students) climbed on the stage to hand over the gift, the
stage was empty, the speaker had athletically jumped down; next fraction of the
second, he was on the stage again to receive the gift! I had a pressing question to
Mr. Narayana Kartikeyan: “what time does he get up?”. I have this question also
for Mr. Tendulkar, Mr. Pathan, Ms. Aishwairya Rai, Mr. Bill Gates or even our
Prime Minister Mr. Singh. You may guess the answer.
All the people listed above are so called “successful people”. We can take
up some more examples and there may be some “rare cases” as well. The point I
am trying to drive is: what is a typical time to wake up and why? Nationwide at
every IIT, classes start at 8:00 AM. It is almost sure that in a week (or in a month)
each of us will have at least one interesting class at 8:00 AM. A well-known
human tendency is to avoid some thing that disciplines you. There is another
thing called the “Biological clock”- which you must have experienced many a
times till now.
We get up at some time as per our schedule. The problem is not with the
getting up. It is with the time we chose to go to the bed. If we wish to get up the
next day we should go to the bed before 11:59 PM on the previous day.
Note that 12:01 AM belongs to the next day. A seven-hour sleep makes your
face look beaming for Janta in the institute; you yourself will feel better (from
inside). Take these suggestions, otherwise who knows, someone may bang at
your door at 7:30 AM when you are looking forward for a sleep of 4 more hours.
-----------------------------
You may also like to remember a poem you must have read during your primary education about getting up early ,describing the redness of the sun, washing the face, brushing; blooming of the flowers, movement of butterflies,
birds…. Do not be upset if you hear monkey’s sounds while in This hostel.

American Journal of Physics -- August 1982 -- Volume 50, Issue 8, pp. 679-679
[This published letter was brought to my attention by one of the graduate student in IIT Madras]. I wrote my reaction as follows:
"I just glanced through the 'letter'. It raises a bit of interest on the questions raised in there. Even though I do not find myself competent to comment on any of these, I wonder, if there could be some way out to get rid of this threat? (It is obvious that the student (I do not know who he is?) or his group has drilled this letter (published in 1982) out of some interest).
Are we really trying to threaten the students (with Physics)? Or in other words, could we do something to make their threat a bit less (or generate a friendship with the subject) but imparting at the same level? Or Are we able to just generate some interest (question number x in Cafetaria*) to read extra about the topics we 'covered' in the 'extra' classes?
Regards,
Prem"

Thanks to media hype about H1N1, several people who trust me have either approached or called me to advice. The hype in media about the utility of face masks and N95 respirators as a tool for general protection against H1N1can't be deplored enough. Yesterday, a friend who listened wanted me to write down briefly what I advised so that he could tell others in similar words. Hence this short email to friends whom I have advised recently (and others whom I haven't yet). Please realize that this is not an official advice, especially the one about face masks or N95.
Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.
Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps – not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practiced (instead of focusing on howto stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption..
6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals.
Happy breathing!
Thanks & Regards,
Suresh. S

Once a child was sick and doctor had suggested to stop the chocolate/ sweet.
Knowing a seniour most person 'a YOGI' in the neigbourhood, mother took her child to the YOGI.
(Thinking that if YOGI asks the child to stop the sweet, he will not insist on eating it).
But Yogi asked them to come the next week.
Next week- yogi asked the child to stop the chocolates.
Surprised at this, mother asked the yogi: why did not he tell this last week itself?
Yogi said, 'Since I myself was eating sweet last week, I could not tell it to the child.
This week I have stopped it, so that I can suggest this to the child as well.
